An old proverb asks, how do you eat an elephant? The answer is… one bite at a time.
First Bite: Improving Internet Traffic to Small Businesses
The second most popular way for businesses to advertise and draw web traffic to their websites on the Internet is through banner or display ads; second to search engine placement. The number of people that click a banner ad compared to the number of impressions or times viewed is commonly less than 0.1%. Basically, people do not like banner ads, but they still occasionally click the ads. Banner ads take up webpage real estate and distract the users from what they are doing. I believe banner ads popularity is greatly in absence of other means.
Since large and small business share the same system of banner advertising, small businesses either pay premium pricing or settle for less popular website placement, smaller ads, and/or few impressions (times viewed).
With these limitations, how can a small business attract more users or improve the click percentage to increase the Internet traffic on their website?
Second Bite: Web programming occupational market is growing hungry
Schools are churning out web programmers by the thousands each year, programming jobs are scooped up over-seas at lower cost, and programs like Content Management Systems (CMS), are making it easier for amateurs to create their own websites, and yet the web programming industry is thriving with good pay, chances for advancement, below average stress levels, and flexible work schedules.
Although there is a constant stream of enhancements to technology, mostly formatting and adherence to smart mobile screen use, there has not been a ground-breaking leap forward for some time.
Furthermore, web programmers’ resumes tend to look the same following the initial filter of qualifications. After the programmer proves they qualify for the job, how do they stand out to be the top applicant and get the job? They need to bring something new.
Elephant: There is no Interactive Visual representation of the Internet itself.
When there is a great story, someone writes a book, the better stories are retold visually in movies, and some of the best stories are experienced in video games.
We have the Internet, told in web pages, retold in streaming movies and video, and there are webpages or games that are interactive, but the vast Internet itself is NOT. With over 25 years of websites, we still browse web pages and click on text or image links and wait for the next web page to load.
